A new study has found that 61.1% of shoppers in the UK are buying some or all of their groceries on the internet, suggesting that the pandemic-enforced online shopping boom has forced many to change their habits permanently.
The UK Online Grocery Report 2022, which was carried out by digital commerce platform Spryker and market research company Appinio, polled 2,500 UK shoppers aged between 16 and 65. It is the latest instalment in a series of national reports on grocery shopping habits, with previous studies having been conducted in the US and Germany, and the UK’s 61.1% figure of online grocery shoppers puts the nation significantly ahead of both the US (where only around half buy online) and Germany (a third).
The survey found that people in the 35-44 age range went online for groceries the most, allocating 26.1% of their grocery shopping share to this method over the last six months. Perhaps the more surprising statistic, however, is that demographic in second place is people aged 55-65, with 24.6% of their grocery shopping done on the web.
Interestingly, the results also show a contradiction in how British consumers view their future shopping habits. More than four out of five (82.5%) say they enjoy a trip to the supermarket, yet only 25% think they will be buying all their groceries in physical stores by 2024.
This summarises a set of results that show a general enthusiasm for shopping in the UK, whether online or offline, but is also a reminder that stores cannot be complacent and need to bear in mind the likely shift in habits coming in the near future. They should also take heed of the stat that a better user experience would prompt over 80% of Brits to shop more online.
