Google has revealed that it is currently testing out a new feature that will allow people to search for specific sections of a video.
This was revealed by Google’s @GoogleIndia Twitter account, with it being piloted in India for starters.
To search for a specific section of a video, users will need to use the Search app on their phone. Here, they’ll find the new ‘Search in video’ feature. Google demoed the process in a video:
Do you struggle with skipping to the good part of the video? 👀

We're piloting the ability to search within videos on your phone's Search app. Just type in your query using the ‘Search in video’ feature & find exactly what you’re looking for.#GoogleForIndia pic.twitter.com/G3KIhpO7ow— Google India (@GoogleIndia) December 19, 2022
The feature will use captions from the video in order to search through its contents – both captions auto-generated by YouTube or those uploaded by a user will work.
This potential new feature highlights the importance of ensuring captions on videos are coherent and, most importantly, accurate, to ensure people can search for what they’re looking for and not end up looking at another video creator’s work instead. Potentially, in the future, this could be a consideration for SEO (search engine optimisation) too if the world of video-based search grows.
At present, the feature is only being piloted in India, so it’s not yet known whether it will be successful or expanded to areas like the UK or US. It does, however, show that businesses should ensure they’re producing content in a wide variety of different formats to reach as many people as possible as people begin to turn to video-based search on platforms like Google and TikTok. Indeed, this new feature could potentially be in the works in order to combat the rise of the younger generation using the short-form video-sharing platform TikTok as a search engine in its own right.
