A look at Google’s trending searches over the last few days gives an interesting insight into how Brits spent the festive period, with television, sport and shopping among the biggest themes.
The biggest search on Christmas Day was ‘Gavin and Stacy’, with the sitcom’s return after nearly a decade’s absence pulling in 11.6 million viewers and becoming the most viewed Christmas programme of the decade.
‘Eastenders’ was another TV show in the top 20 on December 25, but overall it seems that Google users were thinking about shopping. ‘Boxing Day sales’ was the fourth biggest search (even though footfall in UK shops on Boxing Day was reportedly down from last year’s), and ‘Currys’, ‘Zara’ and ‘Argos sale’ were all also among the biggest searches, along with likely Christmas gifts like ‘AirPods’ and ‘iPhone 11’.
On Boxing Day, the day’s traditionally heavy sporting calendar dominated Google, with the Leicester City vs. Liverpool and Manchester United vs. Newcastle United fixtures taking the top two places, and cricket also featuring (South Africa vs. England). Again, retail-themed searches were popular, with ‘John Lewis’, ‘Next sale’ and ‘Tesco opening times’ all in the top 10.
British Googlers displayed a lack of imagination yesterday, with ‘New Year’s Day’ being the biggest search. Six of the top ten searches were to do with football, and it also appears that Brits started 2020 with a day in front of the telly as the likes of ‘Dracula BBC’ and ‘Doctor Who’ made the list, as did Jools Holland with his customary boogying gateway into the new year.
Over the Christmas and New Year period, day-to-day news tends to take a back seat, but some major stories did feature in the lists, including the ongoing bushfire crisis in Australia, the December 27 plane crash in Kazakhstan, and the New Year Honours list.
