Twitter’s search function is to be upgraded to improve the user experience. According to Twitter engineer Frost Li, the improvements will make it easier for users to find out what’s happening in the real time.
The improvements will include “autocomplete”, a feature which corrects spellings and the option to search only for posts made by people whom they follow. When using the “search autocomplete” option, the most likely results to a query will be shown as the search query is being typed. For instance, as a name is typed into the search box the results will start to appear before the full name is typed. These will alter as the full search term is typed. Frost Li wrote in a blog post:
“To that end, today we’re introducing search autocomplete and ‘People you Follow’ search results to twitter.com.
“In addition to recent improvements like related query suggestions, spelling corrections and more relevant search results, these updates make it even easier to immediately get closer to the things you care about.”
Users can select an option to only view tweets for a specified topic from people they are following, if they wish. According to Li, selecting this option is a useful way to find information which is useful and to be able to join the conversation. Data released by Twitter indicates over 140 million users, with the majority situated in the US. Social networking sites, including Twitter play an important role in a company’s search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign, whether the company is in Liverpool or the US.
