Twitter Blue verified creators to get ad revenue from Twitter

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced that the platform will be sharing ad revenue with Twitter Blue verified creators, and also shed light on the future of the legacy blue verified checkmarks.

As of today, Twitter will share its ad revenue with creators. Currently, Twitter Blue verified creators are able to get revenue only from ads that appear in their reply threads. This new update seems to have been released due to YouTube launching an ad revenue sharing scheme with creators through its YouTube Partner Program – a move with a view to helping YouTube become the most rewarding social network for creators.

Other social networks such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat already have similar monetisation options for users who publish Reels and video content. Instagram offers eligible creators up to $1,200 (around £1,000) for Reel views.

The only difference between other platforms and the new feature on Twitter is that creators will need to have an active Twitter Blue subscription, and also meet eligibility requirements.

Twitter has also announced that it is no longer offering the Twitter API free of charge to help reduce the number of bots on the platform. This means that it could affect social scheduling platforms like Buffer and Hootsuite, as well as plugins bloggers might use to feed content through to their social media platforms.

Musk has also announced that the traditional blue verified checkmark will be removed in just a few months, meaning users will have to pay for a Twitter Blue subscription to keep their blue tick.
