TripAdvisor and Facebook join forces

Following the postings of unreliable comments on TripAdvisor, the site received a huge amount of bad publicity which resulted in a loss of confidence among site users. A recent collaboration with Facebook may be able to turn that around.

A new feature will let users log in using a ‘log in with Facebook’ link. As travellers log in with this button, they will be presented with reviews which have been left by their friends within Facebook. The comments will then display reviews left by ‘friends of friends’, potentially leading to large numbers of reviews. The initiative has been launched to generate trust with travellers who use the site, believing that a person will trust the opinion of friends rather than a stranger.

Anyone can log in on TripAdvisor through Facebook without their identity being revealed online. The traveller will be presented with reviews and ‘likes’ from friends, followed by ‘friends of friends’ and then general reviews which have been left on the site. If a user would like more information about a location or attraction, they can send a private message to ask someone in the network. The vice president of global product for TripAdvisor, Adam Medros said:

“Travel advice from friends is incredibly useful, but your inner circle may not have all the answers on a particular hotel or destination you are researching. The Friend of a Friend feature increases the probability of an even greater personalised TripAdvisor experience by highlighting options from a larger network of travellers that know the people you trust.”

Facebook plays an important role in search engine optimisation, helping to create trust between a business and potential customers, from Liverpool to LA.
