South African Doogle challenged by Google

Doogle, a South African website has received news that Google is threatening a lawsuit against the company which provides a search site for jobs. Although the threat of the lawsuit may be potentially damaging for Doogle, the owner is amazed by the huge boost in traffic numbers since the threat emerged.

According to Andries Maree Van Der Merwe, the site’s owner, the website received over a million hits last week, causing the site to crash. The website was created and launched two years ago and its main function is to provide a free job search service to the unemployed in South Africa. However, Google attorneys have allegedly issued a letter which threatens to sue Van Der Merwe for infringement of copyright, as the logo and name are similar to the search engine giants. The name is displayed with the letter ‘O’ representing eyes and also displays a phrase ‘Doogle it’.

As the website has now gone international and has received more hits in a short period than during the initial year of operation, Van Der Merwe is now considering his option of a legal battle. The site has now expanded operations to include more classified listings. The attorney of Van Der Merwe has reportedly offered to display a notice on the website which separates it from Google. However, a spokesperson for Google said that it was “passionate about protecting the reputation of our brand”.

Google plays an integral role in search engine optimisation and this includes dealing with copyright infringement. Companies with an online presence work hard to produce original content as part of their SEO.
