Skype joins Facebook in battle with Google

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has announced that Skype will be joining the social media giant to launch live video chat to its users. The new development is just the latest in the technological battle against Google. The Google+ service was launched last week – and also features video calls.

Users of Facebook have previously been content to use an instant chat feature but will now have the ability to chat with friends ‘face to face’ following the deal with Skype. The membership of Facebook has risen to a magnificent 750 million users, leading the way in social media.

Google+ has a feature called Hangouts, which allows up to ten people to hold a video conferencing call. The only downside to this is that users have to receive an invitation to join, whereas anyone can become a member of Facebook, making it a much more attractive proposition. Skype has 170 million active users, which could increase dramatically as a result of their latest deal with Facebook.

According to an engineer at the Seattle office of Facebook, members who use instant text chat will be prompted by the network to use video calling. There are also rumoured to be other new technical additions to Facebook in the near future but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Competition is increasing all the time between social networking sites, making it essential for businesses to stay ahead with their search engine optimisation strategy. The new developments aid all businesses from Scotland down to Liverpool with the creation of an effective SEO campaign.

  • I kind of hope that facebook and Skype (AKA Microsoft) will make a bit of headway against google- so that we aren’t dominated only by one player.
