Make a list and check it twice

Make a list and check it twice

Lists are very useful for a great many things, from checking you’ve bought the right shopping to making sure you haven’t forgotten an important task in your day. We all use them, even Father Christmas, and perhaps surprisingly lists are also fun to read.

Now hold on, we’re not suggesting that your shopping list is fun to read (unless you’re visiting a specialist shop). No, the lists that are fun to read are lists such as ‘dumbest ways people have killed themselves’ or ‘stupidest things to say on a first date’. They’re entertaining, and are very popular in an Internet marketing environment.

Lists attract traffic and links. People are interested in links, and like to post about them on their websites, which gives your site a useful backlink. Writing lists on your websites, intelligently written, witty and informative lists, is one of the best ways of making use of your content.

It can be a well researched list or a throw away funny list that you’ve made up yourself, but most importantly, keep it short. The attention span of the average Internet user isn’t great, and lists should ideally be seven items long.

Ten is considered too many, five too few.
