Google tests new ‘what to know’ feature in AI Mode

In the most recent update to its AI Mode feature, Google is once again testing a new addition to its AI (artificial intelligence)-generated product summaries in its search results.

We previously wrote about Google beginning to test its AI Mode in product summaries; however, the search giant appears to be experimenting further.

Spotted by SEO (search engine optimisation) specialist Brodie Clark and later shared on X by SERP Alert, this latest test introduces a new section titled ‘what to know’ to free listing results within AI Mode.

This new feature utilises Google’s AI technology to generate a short snippet of product-related information based on key insights and user reviews.

This AI-generated summary appears alongside product listings, providing shoppers with a clear and concise overview of what people are saying about a particular item, without needing to click through to a website.

While this may make for a more convenient search experience for the average online shopper, it is likely to cause a rise in zero-click searches. Search engine users will be able to get the information they need about an item, directly on the results page. As a result, this can reduce website traffic.

For online retailers, this test is a reminder of the importance of customer reviews and detailed product information. Positive feedback about an item could boost visibility, with the information being featured in these AI-generated summaries, while negative reviews may have the opposite effect.

This ‘what to know’ feature is still very much in its experimental phase, but it’s clear that Google is looking to integrate AI within its shopping results. This means that ecommerce businesses should focus on high-quality, trustworthy product information and genuine customer feedback sooner rather than later to ensure visibility ahead of any future updates.
