Google begins testing AI mode in product summaries

In a recent update to its AI Mode feature, Google has been testing AI-generated summaries for products within free listing results.

This was highlighted in a post by SERP Alert on X, which showed a short video demonstrating the functionality of this new feature.

When a user makes a product-related search query such as “cheap headphones”, and they click on a product listing, this will prompt a knowledge panel to open.

With the addition of this new feature, this product-specific knowledge panel will feature an AI-generated product summary. This will typically include the pros and cons of the product along with other relevant information.

This provides users with an overview of a product without needing to navigate away from the search results.

What does this mean for website owners?

Unfortunately, for website owners, this could mean a decline in the amount of organic search traffic brought to a site.

This is because the necessary information is provided to the users directly within the results page.

This limits the need for users to click through to a website to find the information they’re looking for, resulting in what is called a ‘zero click search’.

To combat this, website owners should ensure that their product pages are full of information that these AI-generated summaries can’t fully replicate, such as reviews and rich media.

At Engage Web, we can help mitigate traffic lost from zero-click searches. Get in touch with the team of experts today to see how we can help your website perform.
