Tired of seeing certain phrases or buzzwords on your LinkedIn feed? Perhaps you’re a die-hard (excuse the pun) believer that Christmas shouldn’t be mentioned before December, or maybe you can’t stand to see another post referring to something as a ‘game changer.’
Unfortunately, while LinkedIn has introduced a handy mute and unfollow feature, to help clear your feed of updates from certain people, it doesn’t yet offer a way to filter out specific words or phrases.
That means, Merry Christmas! Those buzzwords are here to stay.
Although you cannot currently mute specific words on LinkedIn, there are alternative ways to go about hiding unwanted content.
Hide individual posts
If you stumbled across a post on your feed that you don’t want to see, simply click the three dots that appear in the top right-hand corner of the post and select ‘I don’t want to see this’ from the menu. You may be prompted to provide a reason why you don’t want to see it from a list of options.
This can help influence what LinkedIn shows you in future. Hiding posts that you don’t want to see sends signals to reduce this type of content on your LinkedIn algorithm.
Browser extensions
There are several browser extensions, such as Cringe Guard and Poper Blocker that can limit unwanted content clogging up your feed.
These tools allow you to input certain words or phrases, such as “Christmas” or “game changer”, and the extension will filter out and hide posts containing these terms from your feed.
Mute or unfollow users
You may find that it is content published by certain people or businesses that you don’t find very interesting or relevant. In this case, you can either mute or unfollow.
Muting a user allows you to temporarily hide their posts without unfollowing them. This can be useful if you want to keep your connection but don’t want to see their updates for a while.
This discreet option allows you to shape your feed into a relevant and engaging space while maintaining your relationships.
Unfollowing a user goes a step further by removing their posts from appearing in your feed completely. You’ll remain connected, but won’t see their posts.
