In the most recent update to Google Search Console, Google has introduced a new report that gives website owners a clearer view of how their content appears in AI (artificial intelligence)-powered search results.
The new Generative AI Performance Report shows how often the pages of a website appear in Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode.
The report focuses on impressions, which shows the number of times a link to a particular page on a website was featured within these AI-generated results.
Unlike traditional performance reports, it doesn’t show how many users clicked on the link to visit the website. Despite this, an impression highlights that Google has recognised the page as a relevant source of information and displayed it alongside an AI-generated answer or summary.
This is particularly useful as AI Overviews can lead to more zero-click searches, where users find the information that they need directly on the results page without needing to visit a website.
Although the new report can’t prevent these zero-click searches, it can help businesses understand whether their content is appearing within AI-generated results, even when that visibility doesn’t lead to a website visit. This can provide useful context when traffic to certain pages changes. Website owners can use the report to monitor how these impressions change over time and identify which pages appear most often.
This information can also be filtered by country and device, which can help you understand where your visibility is coming from.
Over time, this information can highlight the topics that generate the strongest AI visibility, uncover opportunities to improve important pages and track how a website’s presence changes across Google’s AI-powered search features.
Google is currently introducing this report gradually, so it may not be available for all websites yet.
