In a recent development, OpenAI has introduced paid advertising within ChatGPT.
Following an initial test in the US beginning in February 2026, ChatGPT Ads later launched in the UK, making it the first European market to gain access to the new advertising platform.
This presents an exciting opportunity for online businesses to reach potential customers.
Rather than solely relying on more traditional paid advertising channels such as Google Ads or Meta Ads, this update creates a new opportunity to users directly within ChatGPT where they are actively searching for answers, products or information.
What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are paid advertisements that can appear alongside conversations within ChatGPT.
These advertisements currently appear beneath the AI (artificial intelligence)-generated response, rather than within the answer itself, and are clearly labelled as sponsored content.
This is similar to paid advertisements within Google search results, which are also marked as sponsored to help distinguish them from organic results.
One of the main differences with ChatGPT Ads is that they can be shown based on the context of the conversation a user is having.
For example, if a user asks ChatGPT for ideas on what to cook and mentions that they fancy making a homemade pizza, they could be shown an advert from a pizza oven brand, meal kit provider or supermarket beneath the response.
The idea is to show an advert that is relevant to what the user is already discussing, without changing or influencing the answer ChatGPT provides.
Advertisers cannot pay to influence the answer that ChatGPT provides. Instead, the paid placement remains separate, giving users the option to explore a relevant product, service or brand alongside the information they have requested.
Who will see ChatGPT Ads?
Paid advertising will appear for ChatGPT users on the Free and Go plans.
It is important to note that users subscribed to a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan will not see paid ads within the ChatGPT interface.
For eligible users, the ads will be positioned below ChatGPT’s response. The elements of the ad may include the advertisers name, a link to the ad’s landing page, the brand’s logo, a short title or headline and a brief section of copy.
What do ChatGPT Ads mean for businesses?
With the search landscape changing and more people using AI search engines to find information, ChatGPT Ads introduces another way to reach potential customers while they are actively searching a topic, product or service relevant to your industry.
This could make ChatGPT an increasingly important advertising channel, particularly as more people begin using AI tools as part of their everyday search and buying journey.
