Google introduces enter AI mode button for AI Overviews

Search engine titan Google is increasing the visibility of its AI Mode to search engine users with the addition of an ‘Enter AI Mode’ button directly within AI Overviews.

AI Overviews, the text summaries that now appear at the top of search results, will now feature this interactive button to allow users to refine their search with follow up questions without leaving the results page.

This feature appears to be in testing rather than fully rolled out. It was spotted by Radu Oncescu and shared on X, which suggests Google is experimenting ahead of its official release.

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google’s AI-powered search experience. It allows users to ask more detailed questions and in response, receive answers built with information synthesised from multiple sources.

Unlike traditional search, AI Mode keeps track of the context of previous queries, so follow-up questions are based on what has already been asked. This means that users can continue their research without starting a new search each time.

If you want a deep breakdown of what AI Mode is, we’ve detailed this in our previous post on Google’s AI Mode feature.

What does this mean for search engine optimisation (SEO)?

While this update inevitably improves the user experience, it also keeps users on Google.

As a result, there is less need to click though to an external website to find further information.

This means that website owners could see a further decline in organic search traffic, particularly for informational queries where answers are now typically delivered directly on the results page.

This isn’t necessarily a negative thing. The search landscape is evolving and instead of relying on organic search rankings, visibility within AI-generated answers such as these is becoming more important.

If your website content is clear, accurate and well-structured, it is more likely to be used as a source within these AI-generated responses.

When Google uses information from a website, it can cite that source, giving users the option to click through to the external site if they want more detail. This means strong content still has value, even if the initial answer appears on Google.
