Google is adding to its collection of reviews with the purchase of Frommer’s travel guides. With over 300 guidebooks, Google will be aiming to provide a comprehensive review of all places in the world considered relevant. The new addition joins Zagat Survey which provides a review and ratings service for restaurants.
Google is aiming to become the main destination for people to obtain comprehensive reviews for locations around the world. Frommer’s was established in 1957 by Arthur Frommer, with the publishing of ‘Europe on $5 a day’ guide. Google’s mobile apps, local listings and maps will benefit from the growing number of online reviews. The printed version of Frommer’s guidebooks are said to be safe for the immediate future, but as the brand merges with Zagat, the paper version of Frommer’s may become uncertain. A spokeswoman for Google said:
“The Frommer’s team and the quality and scope of their content will be a great addition to the Zagat team. We can’t wait to start working with them on our goal to provide a review for every relevant place in the world.”
The deal was announced recently by the owner of Frommer’s, John Wiley & Sons, which confirmed that Frommer’s was no longer supported by the strategy of the business. A number of other brands will also be sold as part of future plans. As Google builds its online collection of travel reviews and ratings for all areas from Liverpool to LA, this could have implications for the search engine optimisation (SEO) of travel websites.
