Popular video streaming platform YouTube has announced that it is testing AI-generated summaries in its search results.
Similar to Google’s AI Overviews, these AI-generated responses will appear at the top of YouTube’s search results page, providing users with a more efficient way to find the information they’re looking for.
In a recent comment on a YouTube Help community thread, a Team YouTube employee confirmed that they are:
“Experimenting with a new video results carousel that appears after entering certain search queries”.
This new feature will use artificial intelligence technology to sift through large volumes of video content in order to analyse videos in real-time and highlight specific clips that are deemed most relevant to the user’s search.
Once curated, these clips will be presented to the user as part of an AI summary at the top of the search results, significantly reducing the time a user would typically spend watching an entire video to find the information they’re looking for. Instead, users will be able to jump straight to the most relevant part of the video.
YouTube clarified that these AI Overviews will likely appear for a particular type of search query, for example, when a user is looking for product information, such as “best noise cancelling headphones”, or when researching places to visit like “museums to visit in San Francisco”.
Currently, the test is only being rolled out to a small number of YouTube Premium members in the United States, and the feature is only available in response to search queries made in English.
