WordPress founder offers security tips after breach

Matt Mullenweg, founder of content management system (CMS) WordPress, has been offering security advice to users after a number of accounts were targeted in an attack.

The popular blogging site is used by many novice writers for the publishing of content on websites. It is estimated that 17 per cent of all pages online are powered by the tool.

However, in a worrying development for the site, server hosts Cloudflare and Hostgator broke the news that as many as 90,000 users may have been affected by ‘botnet’ attacks.

It is thought that the attackers specifically targeted those with the username ‘admin’. They would then scroll through thousands of passwords until access was granted.

WordPress recently updated its security mechanisms and Mullenweg suggested users adopt the new two-step login process.

On top of this, he had a warning for anyone who was using simplistic login details. He said:

“Here’s what I would recommend: If you still use ‘admin’ as a username on your blog, change it, use a strong password.”

Content has become a hot topic over recent years, with Google’s latest algorithms favouring authentic, original material when deciding on search rankings. As a result, many are turning to content management systems like WordPress to publish news feeds and features.

While some business owners choose to do this themselves, it can pay to outsource content creation to a professional SEO copywriting service. Not only will a reputable company be able to provide great content, it will also have client security high on its priority list.
