After releasing a whole host of monetisation options for its users last year, including Super Follows and its tip jar, Twitter now has a new feature in the works – an Awards option.
An eagle-eyed user took to the platform last week to share her discovery of this new option, which takes the form of a present icon with a plus sign in the middle, situated in the lower function bar of a tweet, in between the ‘like’ and ‘share’ icons:

According to Social Media Today, this new Awards feature looks to be similar to Facebook’s gifts option, which sees gifts bought with its in-app currency Stars, with YouTube’s ‘Super Stickers’ offering similar capabilities. These aren’t the only platforms to boast gifting options either, with Reddit and TikTok also having such features.
If Awards were to work in a similar way to these other gifting options, users would be able to support tweeters and get their attention through the allocation of awards on particular tweets – this could be particularly advantageous to the tweet creators, especially if a tweet goes viral and gets seen by a much higher number than their usual content.
Social Media Today spoke to Twitter about the testing of Awards, with the social networking platform providing the following comments:
“We’re always looking into new ways for people to engage with others on Twitter and don’t have further information to share at this time.”
While for now, there isn’t much information to go off, it’s well worth keeping an eye out for Twitter Awards in the weeks and months to come.
