Teens say Google is cool

Recent research published by online giant Google has revealed the 10 brands considered to be the coolest in the world at the moment according to young people, and the search engine’s findings will no doubt have left it rather pleased with itself.

The study, titled ‘It’s Lit: A guide to what teenagers think is cool’, is based on the opinions of Generation Z – those born in the mid-1990s to early 2000s – with Google choosing to focus on those aged between 13 and 17.

Researchers asked 1,100 teens to rank a total of 122 brands based on how cool they are. In terms of the top 10 brands, Google itself is heavily represented with three Google-related brands making the cut. Video site YouTube, which is owned by Google, came out on top, narrowly edging out Netflix into second place and Google itself into third. The other Google-related brand to make the list is web browser Chrome, which ranks in 10th place.

The top 10 coolest brands amongst teens were named as:

1. YouTube
2. Netflix
3. Google
4. Xbox
5. Oreo
6. GoPro
7. PlayStation
8. Doritos
9. Nike
10. Chrome

Some of the world’s biggest brand names, such as Apple, Spotify and Amazon, failed to make the top 10. Researchers also asked 800 millennials for their opinion in order to make a comparison. Whilst the top three did not change, brands such as Tesla and HBO were held in higher regards by millennials.

As well as asking about the coolest brand names, the study also looked at Gen Z’s social media habits. It looked at the percentage of participants that were signed up to a number of social media platforms, and the results showed that Instagram was the most popular amongst teens, with 59.6% of the participants having an account on the Facebook-owned photo sharing platform.

This was closely followed by Snapchat (56.4%) and Facebook itself (52.8%). Perhaps surprisingly, the study showed that more teens had a Google+ account than had a Twitter account – 42.2% vs 35.4%.

Furthermore, the study breaks down social media usage into the different genders, and this found that teenage girls preferred Instagram – 67.9% of 532 participants – compared to teenage boys who preferred Facebook – 57.6% of 468 surveyed.

Interestingly, teenage girls use Pinterest (45.4%) more than Google+ (40.3%) and Twitter (34.9%), while their male counterparts barely use Pinterest at all (9%).

Google highlighted that the purpose of the report was to provide a glimpse into the world of the most connected generation to date.
