SMEs push Facebook’s number of active advertisers past one million

Facebook confirmed on Tuesday that it has reached the one million active advertisers mark.

The company confirmed that approximately one million marketers used the social network for advertising over the course of the last 28 days.

It was found that the majority of advertisers on the site were from small businesses.

Executives at Facebook are, however, hoping that the one million mark can be surpassed; there are an estimated 16 million smaller businesses with a free page on Facebook, using the platform to run organic internet marketing strategies and engage more closely with their customers.

Although it’s not clear exactly how much money marketers from small companies are spending on Facebook ads, eMarketer reported that in the United States alone, around $32bn (£20bn) was spent by small advertisers.

The director of small business at Facebook, Dan Levy, recently talked about the most common route taken by advertisers on the network. He explained that many small business owners start with a personal Facebook page, going on to form business pages and finally become advertisers.

Revenue from advertising reportedly accounts for around 85% of Facebook’s overall takings – including advertising cash from some of the world’s most recognisable brands.

However, the most recent figures come in the wake of a sharp decline last year in Facebook’s advertising revenue.

One industry analyst from Pivotal Research Group said that owners of small businesses are key to the success of the world’s biggest social network.
