OpenAI, the founder of revolutionary artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT, has officially begun testing a new AI-powered search engine set to rival Google’s premier product.
The company declared the launch of a SearchGPT prototype to a small section of its user and publisher base in an announcement last Thursday. If the search engine’s tests are successful, a full-scale rollout of the search engine may be on the horizon.
According to OpenAI bosses, the prototype is set to function as a combination of the company’s AI programs, including ChatGPT, with more traditional search engine functionality. Similar to ChatGPT, it will aim to answer user searches in a conversational manner, with reliable information from relevant sources.
However, OpenAI has already been forced to deal with legal action taken against it by various media organisations, including the New York Times, for alleged copyright violations. Therefore, its methods for presenting sources in its search engine are likely to come under scrutiny.
While rumours of a search engine from OpenAI to challenge Google have been ongoing, it was Google itself which recently offered its own foray into the arena of generative AI search engines in the form of its AI Overviews feature, which was recently launched in the US.
However, the feature was heavily criticised by users for providing inaccurate and misleading results to search queries.
If successful both in tests and a wider rollout, OpenAI may solidify a place for itself in the battle of the search engines, of which Google has reigned supreme for many years.
