Among the talented pupils who qualified to go through to the semi finals of The Times Spelling Bee in May, are pupils from Westcliff and Wallington schools. The pupils from both schools have worked hard to get through to the semis, and are hoping to make it to the grand final in June 2011.
Pupils from St Bernard’s High School in Westcliff, won the local heat of the spelling bee against nine other schools, which took part in Greenwich O2 Cineworld in London last week. One of the competitors, Lara Adamcyzyk said:
“It was really nerve wracking but we worked well together and pulled through in the end.”
Another team to qualify are pupils from Wilson’s school in Wallington. They will also go through to the semi finals in May 2011. More than 1000 schools have entered a team for the 2011 Times Spelling Bee, with the 11 teams who win the semi finals taking part in the final at IndigO2 in the O2 Arena in June.
Spelling bees are hugely popular in the United States, with the competitions thought to contribute towards raising literacy standards.
