Pinterest rises ahead of Google+ in the US

Pinterest, the photo sharing site, has overtaken Google +, LinkedIn and MySpace to reach third spot in the popularity stakes for social networking sites in the US.

The stock for the invitation request site is also on the rise in the UK, demonstrating its growing importance to business users here.

In the US research, Experian found that the number of visits to the site leapt by 50% between January and February of this year, with nearly 105 million unique visits in March. Whilst the report did not include any information about mobile traffic to the site, it is an incredible performance in just two years since it was launched.

The news will be worrying for many social networking ventures but, most particularly, is the repercussions it could present for Google+. Though SEOs the world over are not likely to close their accounts here, it is likely that they will shift considerable focus over to Pinterest.

This is certainly the case for those optimising their sites to a female audience.

The Experian report also showed that some 60% of Pinterest’s users are women. This figure does seem to be on the decrease though, as the number of total users continues to rise.

Though Google is the company needing to be most concerned, Twitter and Facebook also need to take notice. Delving deeper into the Experian report shows that in five states, Pinterest was the most actually the most visited site.

Perhaps understanding this was another factor in Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram, as reported yesterday?
