An all-new section has been added to Google Business listings called ‘What’s Happening’, which will allow companies to promote short term deals, events and general updates by adding them to the top of their profile.

This option also allows businesses to add a timeframe, so that viewers are aware that these aren’t permanent happenings.

A representative of Google stated:

“What’s Happening puts your timely updates like ‘Today’s Special’ or ‘Live Music on Saturday’ front and centre.”

Although this may seem relatively similar to Google’s existing updates section within your listing, this new section will appear in a more obvious place, allowing it to be one of the main focuses of your profile.

Not only that, but it will also be a place to post more urgent ongoings that may only be relevant for a certain timeframe, whereas the current updates section is more focused on general business updates, and should almost be used as if it was a social media platform – the same way you would with Instagram or Facebook.

To be eligible to utilise this tool, you can create updates via Google Posts. Alternatively, you can connect your Instagram, Facebook or X accounts to the profile, allowing for your updates to be synced automatically.

This tool has been launched to a select few food and drink businesses within locations in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It would definitely be worth utilising this if you are in this industry, and any other industries should keep an eye out for following releases.
