Google is streamlining its products with seven more consigned to the scrap heap, after failing to perform up to expected standards. To simplify the product range, seven Google products will be abandoned, including Wave, Google Gears and Knol.
This is the third time that Google has ended products en masse, following a lack of success. According to experts, this practice may put users off signing up to new products in the future. The news was announced in Google’s official blog. The vice president of operations, Urs Holzle said:
“We’re in the process of shutting a number of products which haven’t had the impact we’d hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward.”
He added that Google wanted to build a user experience which was simple and intuitive. The products to be ended include Wave, the Knol, Google Search Timeline, renewable energy project, Google Gears, Google Friends Connect and Google Bookmarks List. The dates they are due to end are being published by Google.
The principle analyst at research company Ovum, Richard Edwards spoke of the diversity of Google, accepting that among all the innovations, only a small number will be successful. He also welcomed the transparency, as Google was open about new products, keeping people informed.
Just as Google has to make necessary changes, ending some services and products, a search engine optimisation programme has to be updated frequently, monitoring progress of the campaign in order to be successful. New technology may help to maximise performance, which can only occur after a trial period of testing.
