Recent research has indicated that mobile search lacks behind PC searches, with smartphone and tablet users more likely to head directly to the site they want.
The research, largely US-based, was commissioned by xAd and Telemetrics and carried out by Nielsen.
It showed that most mobile device users would directly navigate to a preferred site, or use a previously installed App to access the information required. In the UK, usage of mobile devices is rarely too different to the US, and shows the importance of off-page SEO for firms here.
Generating high quality links is an important aspect of ranking well but, in the mobile world, these links could be essential.
However, on-page SEO should not be neglected for mobile sites.
The figures revealed that the sites visited directly were largely as a result of searches made previously. Delivering a good and relevant service is therefore important.
This is certainly the case for attracting new visits. With more and more people accessing the mobile internet, the landscape is thriving and developing too.
Mobile search is always growing too; the difference is that there is less reliance on search engines when out travelling.
In essence, it is easy to understand why.
Though generous packages are available, the data transfer eats into allowances; so it is far more cost effective to go direct.
Perhaps more importantly is the drain on battery life that mobile surfing causes.
Whatever the reason for search being less popular on the go though, getting your SEO down pat is still as important as ever.
