Not too long ago, the Internet was abuzz with a YouTube clip of Christian Bale losing his cool on the set of Terminator Salvation. The whole web lit up with news of the the Welshman’s antics, but Bale eventually got what he wanted during the rant.
Bale’s rant teaches us several things about the Internet, and about life in general. First of all, you tend to get what you want if you kick up a big enough stink. Second, things stay alive on the Internet for a very, very long time, and if they’re interesting, they never go away. Third, although not all attention is good attention, notoriety is certainly not something to be sniffed at.
There are particular lessons to be had for search engine optimisation in the Batman actor’s rant. One of the hardest SEO jobs is to attract attention and, through that, links. In fact, it’s one of those SEO jobs that never goes away, as the acquisition of attention and links is always required. However, some site owners, notably some successful bloggers, have learned that tapping into the Bale method can get you places.
It’s anti-instinctive to try to attract negative publicity as part of your SEO campaign, but sometimes being a bit controversial can get the attention you’re lacking. Posting a snappy article or observation can get conversation going in your comments, too, further helping your SEO.
It’s important to note that such tactics need to be planned carefully, with some recovery mapped out. After all, most people who have heard the infamous Bale clip think he’s a bit of a drama queen, to put it mildly.
Here’s the clip too – but be warned, it contains very foul language from Mr Bale.
