Grammar causes confusion on street sign

Wording on a ‘Welcome to Benfleet’ sign situated close to Benfleet Bridge has caused confusion for the local council and residents. The sign shows ‘A historical area’ but calls were made to the council to change the wording to ‘An historical area’. Someone has even added a letter ‘n’ to the sign. However, historian Phil Coley considers the original wording to be correct, and should be left as it is.

Castle Point council have received additional calls from residents who say that the original wording is correct and should be left, while the council agree that both versions are correct. The council are now waiting for further instructions on whether the work should go ahead, as it is at the expense of taxpayers. The council have also asked for a further investigation into the costs of altering the sign. At the very least they will have to remove the additional letter ‘n’ which has been added.

Grammatical and spelling errors cause mass confusion and annoyance, with readers becoming irritated by words which are incorrectly spelt or poor grammar. As this story shows, just one letter which may or may not be missing from the sign has caused uproar among residents of the town. Your website can cause the same problems but is more likely to result in visitors to your site leaving and moving on to a site which is grammatically correct. If your English grammar isn’t up to scratch you could outsource content to a professional writer or a UK copywriting agency to ensure your copy is correct, concise and original.
