Google Now update lets US Android users boost TV show knowledge

Google’s personal assistant app for Android devices has been updated to give users with smart TVs additional information on their favourite programmes.

Rolled out to US users of the Google Now app, the update offers access to a button called ‘Listen in for TV show’. This allows users to draw up information on shows they’re currently watching.

Writing on Google+, the company said:

“Just connect your Android device to the same network that your TV is on and tap ‘Listen for a TV show’ in Google Now. We will show you information, like where you’ve seen an actor in the cast before, or more information about the people mentioned in the show.”

The company went on to give an example of the app’s new functionality, explaining that those who recently watched ‘King of the Wire’ Nik Wallenda cross a tightrope strung over the Grand Canyon could have learnt, using Google Now, that Wallenda holds seven world records.

As well as the ‘Listen in for TV show’ button, the app’s newest version lets users with valid vouchers see offers available at nearby restaurants, cafes and retailers – suggesting small businesses with SEO and other online strategies in place could further boost their visibility through digital vouchers.

At present, the updates are only available for users based in the United States. While Google offered no hints about whether or not the new functionality would be made available to Android users living outside the U.S., there’s no reason why it might not be available to users in other territories at some point in the future.
