In a recent addition to Google Search Central Blog, Google announced the launch of a new feature in Google Search Console called Query groups.
This feature will automatically group similar search queries into organised groups within the new Insights window.
Traditionally, Google Search Console displays performance metrics, including clicks, impressions and average position, for each individual search term.
With this new update, the performance monitoring tool will now recognise when different queries share the same meaning or searcher intent and will combine them into a single, easily digestible table.
There are many ways to write the same search query. For example, someone searching for ways to bake chocolate chip cookies may search “easy chocolate chip cookie recipe”, “how to make chocolate chip cookies” or “recipe for chocolate chip cookies”.
While the wording of each search query varies, they each have the same meaning.
Previously, each of these queries appeared separately in Search Console, displaying their own performance metrics.
However, as there can be many variations of the same search query, analysing the performance across all of them individually to help determine which topics are helping toward site visibility can be difficult.
This new Query feature helps simplify the process by combining similar searches into one clearer, more actionable view.
The report will show important performance metrics, including the total number of clicks for the entire group, and whether this is trending up or down compared to the previous period.
With this information, you can better understand how your content performs across related queries, helping you identify which topics are driving clicks and impressions to your site. This can help you refine your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy more effectively.
