Facebook’s changing its name? Seriously?

In news that sounds like we’re making it up, several sources are reporting that the social media behemoth you know as Facebook could be about to get a new moniker.

Rumours first began to circulate yesterday on the tech site The Verge, which has reported that Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg plans to discuss a name change during a company conference a week today. However, the article also suggests that the change is imminent and could be confirmed before the conference takes place.

It’s not quite as radical as it might sound though, with the suggestion being that Facebook will be rebranding its parent company, going down a similar route to that of Google in 2015. Today, Alphabet is the holding company that oversees Google and other products it has acquired, like YouTube and Blogger, but the name “Google” remains more commonly attached to its services than “Alphabet”. The likelihood is that Facebook would operate similarly, with the social media site and app sure to keep the name, but a newly named holding company forming the umbrella for it and other Facebook-owned products like Instagram and WhatsApp.

What will the new name be?

Facebook will not even confirm whether the rumour is true or not at this stage, so it seems highly unlikely that we will get any insight into the new name before it goes live.

That hasn’t stopped certain parties having a guess though. CampaignLive.co.uk has somewhat jokingly suggested “Metaface” due to Zuckerberg’s admission earlier this year that he wanted Facebook to be more of a “metaverse company”, with the phrase referring to a concept of a future internet geared towards shared virtual spaces.

  • […] Whispers of the change emerged in the week prior to its official announcement, with CampaignLive.co.uk even correctly predicting that the term “meta” would form part of the new moniker. The name alludes to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for the company to create a “metaverse” – a futuristic form of the internet with shared spaces and augmented reality at its core.
