Facebook expected to introduce video sharing feature to Instagram

Firing up rumours about plans to introduce new video features to Instagram, Facebook recently invited press to learn more at a mystery-shrouded event in its California headquarters this Friday.

TechCrunch recently reported that the social media giant plans to bolster its popular image sharing app Instagram with a new video feature, in what many see as its response to Twitter’s increasingly popular video app, Vine.

Back in May, Reuters’ social media editor wrote in a blog that Facebook has been testing a video function similar to Vine.

Citing an anonymous source, he said the new feature would allow Instagram users to upload videos between five and 10 seconds long using a mobile device.

Some observers believe that revamping Instagram’s features to include video sharing capabilities would give Facebook a boost against its rivals.

Importantly for internet marketing specialists, figures released last week showed that Vine videos were now getting more shares on Twitter than Instagram images.

Twitter bought Vine back in October 2012, releasing it for iOS last January and Android systems earlier this month. Facebook bought Instagram in spring last year for £638m.

Facebook’s invitation to the press, sent out last week, invited recipients for a coffee but revealed only that a small team within the company has been working on what it referred to as a “big idea”. Sent via snail mail, the postcard was printed with a brown coffee ring in one corner.

Rumours also abound that Facebook has plans to offer users an alternative to Google Reader.
