Exam watchdog Ofqual has labelled errors on AS-level exam papers as ‘disappointing and unacceptable’. Students sitting AS-level exams in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, found that three of the exam papers were impossible to answer correctly or in some cases, questions incomplete.
The mistakes could have a huge impact on thousands of students who have studied hard to get the grades needed for a place at university. A number of students have complained by contacting the BBC news website. Glenys Stacey, the chief executive of Ofqual has requested extra checks to be carried out by exam bodies on GCSE and A level papers which are being taken this term. According to the watchdog, the number of errors found is similar to the mistakes found in previous years, but has taken steps in order to maintain confidence from the public.
Errors found in the papers include a question in business studies which didn’t give enough information to allow an answer, and multiple choice questions on the biology paper which didn’t include the correct answer. The effect on marks varied from just 1 out of 425 to a massive 11 percent of the total marks.
Although spelling mistakes and grammatical errors on a business website won’t cause anyone to lose a place at university, they can cause a huge amount of confusion for customers.
