If you own an online business and marketing tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics to check how your website is performing, you may have noticed that the numbers don’t always match up.
For example, Google Search Console might say that you’ve had 100 clicks to your site this month, while Google Analytics is telling you that your website has had 400 total users.
This doesn’t mean that either tool is wrong – they’re just measuring different things.
Google Search Console is a tool designed to provide website owners with information on how their site is performing in Google’s search results.
It can tell you how many people clicked through to your website from Google, how many times your pages appeared in search results and the average ranking position of these pages, amongst other metrics.
It’s important to note that Google Search Console is only reporting on Google search results. It doesn’t show traffic from other search engines or traffic sources.
Google Analytics, on the other hand, looks at the bigger picture and shows how your website performs across different marketing channels – not just Google.
This could include people typing your website address directly into their browser, clicking through from another website, finding you through other search engines such as Bing or Yahoo, clicking on a social media post or coming from a paid ad.
This can help you understand which channels are most effective at bringing traffic to your site.
If you’re investing in search engine optimisation (SEO) through a digital marketing agency, it can also help show whether this work is contributing towards enquiries, sales or other key conversions.
It can also help identify whether other marketing activity, such as paid ads or social media campaigns, are contributing to website performance.
So, while Google Search Console might show 100 clicks from Google search, Google Analytics may show a higher number of total users because it includes people coming from other sources too, not just Google search.
This is why the numbers in Google Search Console and Google Analytics are often different.
Google Search Console is useful for understanding how well your site is performing in Google search. Google Analytics is useful for understanding where else your website traffic is coming from.
Together, both tools help give a clearer picture of your website performance.
