What’s Google’s new Small Business Advisors programme all about?

Search giant Google has recently announced the beta launch of a new programme for small businesses, with the aim of helping them improve their marketing on Google.

The “Small Business Advisors” programme is set to offer 50-minute personalised consulting sessions via video call to small businesses, with the sessions focusing on a range of different Google products – from Analytics and Ads, to Google My Business and YouTube.
Search Engine Land reports that Google has stated the programme is only open to small businesses with an active Google account. Larger businesses, as well as SEO and marketing agencies, are ineligible for participation.

Google doesn’t appear to have defined what exactly constitutes a “small business”, but it can be assumed that any company with 499 employees or fewer can qualify, as per the definition from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The programme has been designed specifically for owners of small businesses who feel overwhelmed by establishing an online presence for their business, those who don’t use the services of a marketing agency or specialist, those with advanced questions on particular Google products and those who have never before used its products.

Prior to the appointment, small businesses are encouraged to share their goals, as the Google advisor will carry out research prior to the appointment based on this information to provide tailored recommendations. The appointments will be interactive, with screensharing, question-and-answer time and product discussions all included. Google has also confirmed that advisors will help small businesses set up and optimise the right products for their business.

One testimonial from the programme, from the owner of Janaisa Port Photography, said:

“This meeting was super helpful, my Advisor was very patient and knowledgeable. I got to learn a lot about Google My Business and Ads. I really appreciate the help to set things up and start running an ad campaign.”

During the appointment, small businesses will be allowed to discuss two Google products. Currently, Google has stated that it has no plans to release any bundles or discounts for those wanting further sessions to discuss additional products, although it has indicated there is potential for it to be explored in the future. At present, the programme is also only available in the US, but, as it is only in beta testing at present, and Google’s new releases typically move across the Atlantic in time, small businesses in the UK may be able to make use of Small Business Advisors in the future.

Google’s goal for the programme is to save small businesses time and to leave them feeling confident in their newfound knowledge. Here at Engage Web, we share this sentiment, as we pride ourselves on our jargon-free communication with our clients. We can help businesses of all sizes save time and realise their digital marketing potential. If you want to learn more, contact our team today.
