Have you ever wanted to view an older version of a site?
That might be to find something from a site you’ve previously visited, or you might be looking for old content from your own website. Well, Google has now introduced an Internet Archive option in the search results.
To access this feature, you’ll need to click the three dots next to the search result, select “About This Result” and click “More About This Page.”
If you scroll down, you will see a link that says: “See Previous Versions on Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine”. This will then open the site with a toolbar at the top, where you can switch between previous versions of the site.
A spokesperson from Google stated that:
“Many people, including those in the research community, value being able to see previous versions of webpages when available.”
This can be handy for accessing old content such as pages, blog posts, images or even text that may have been forgotten about in the redesign discussions.
However, there are some limitations, as this feature will not be available on sites. So, it shouldn’t be something that you’re relying on.
The rights holder of the page has the option to opt out, too, which will remove this feature from the website. The same thing will happen should the page violate any content policies.
Typically, though, if you have lost old content or would like to retrieve content that you previously had on your site, this is the ideal tool to help you find what you’re looking for.
