A lead magnet is a something of perceived value that you offer online, either via your website or over social media, that other people can access in exchange for giving you their contact details.
Creating a good lead magnet that works may feel like a mammoth task requiring hours and hours of work, but that’s simply not the case if you know what you’re doing.
How do you make sure you’re on the right track when creating a lead magnet? Well, if you can answer these three questions clearly, you’re off to a great start.
What do I want to achieve?
As a business or brand, you need a clear idea of what it is you want your lead magnet to help you achieve. Importantly, this should go a little beyond simply ‘wanting people to download it’.
While a short-term goal of the lead magnet may be to get more people onto your mailing list, for example, that shouldn’t be the be-all and end-all of your goals.
Essentially, you want leads, and you need to decide what kind of leads you want. There’s likely to be some different types of leads you can gain within your industry, so decide which ones you most prefer, and target them especially.
Who am I targeting?
You need to know specifically what you want your ideal client to come to you for before you create your lead magnet – that’s what will make them your ideal client.
Don’t hesitate to be as specific as possible about your ideal client. What kind of business or person are they? What are their goals? The more fleshed out your picture of your ideal client is, the easier it will be to tailor the content of your lead magnet around them.
What happens after they download my lead magnet?
Often, people who create their very first lead magnet will quickly find out that the time spent writing and designing the lead magnet itself is the LEAST important part of the entire process.
How can that be? Well, unfortunately, there’s a great chance that the people who download it aren’t even going to read it. Not because it’s not useful to them, but because they might be a bit lazy. Do NOT expect the people who download your lead magnet to end up getting in touch with you of their own accord.
Them downloading the lead magnet will give you their contact details. You need to get in touch with them, maybe ask them how they’re getting on with what they learned in the lead magnet, and if they tell you they haven’t had a chance to open it yet, that’s your opportunity to tell them how your services can solve the problem they initially downloaded the lead magnet for.
That’s the backbone of a good lead magnet; and, at Engage Web, we know how to bring quality leads into businesses just like yours through this marketing tool. If you want to bring in more business from your ideal type of client, speak to our team today.
