Claude overtakes ChatGPT as most popular AI app

A major shift has happened in the world of artificial intelligence. Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, has become the number one free app on Apple’s App Store in the United States.

It has now passed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has held the top spot for a long time. Google’s Gemini sits further down the list in fourth place.

Claude’s sudden rise happened after a wave of public anger aimed at OpenAI. People online reacted strongly when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company would be working with the U.S. Department of War to deploy AI in classified military systems. Many users worried about how this technology might be used and whether it could lead to more government surveillance or new weapons powered by AI.

Public opinion appears to be shifting too. Many people are choosing to use Claude instead of ChatGPT as a way to support safer AI development. According to Anthropic, free users grew more than 60% since January, daily signups have tripled since November, and paid subscribers have more than doubled this year. Before February 8, the Claude app ranked #42 in the U.S. charts. Now, it sits firmly in the top 10.

Another boost for Anthropic, as well as Claude users themselves, has been the tool’s new feature that allows users to transfer their data from other AI tools, including ChatGPT. Essentially, this feature allows users who have spent weeks, months or even years training an AI assistant to understand its preferences to simply transfer data to Claude and, in theory, keep all of their AI’s current understanding.

The debate over how AI should be used is becoming more heated as the technology spreads into everyday life. This latest change in app rankings shows that normal users can still influence the direction of the AI industry. The battle for the future of artificial intelligence is not only happening in governments and boardrooms but also in the choices people make about which apps they use.
