When it comes to browsing the internet, there are more methods of doing so than ever before.
Devices come in many shapes and sizes, so it is not just desktops that we need to take into consideration. Smart devices have taken over as the most common device used when it comes to internet browsing – particularly smartphones.
This is why it is just as important to make your website compatible with mobiles as it is with a desktop device. If you decide not to, and your site doesn’t function correctly on a mobile, you could be missing out of many conversions, simply because you didn’t take the preferences of others into consideration.
Here are a few tips on how you can alter the mobile version of your site to make the user’s experience a positive one, no matter the platform:
Create a responsive design
This means that the site will adjust based on the size of the screen and will look slightly different on each one. Some items might change shape or size or might even disappear to fit the screen size.
Simplify your navigation system
Having a good navigation system is essential as it allows your visitors to get from one place to the next. However, it is important to not over-complicate things.
Most desktop versions of sites will have a horizontal menu; however, this won’t translate well to mobile devices. So, something like a hamburger menu would be much better suited.
Create a touch-friendly design
Try to reduce popups that might be difficult to close down on mobiles, and avoid using hover interactions as they are not possible on a device with a touch screen. Instead, try using pinching, tapping or swiping gestures to ensure all features of your website can be utilised on smart devices.
