According to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, accounts powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are set to become a common feature of two of the biggest social media platforms online.
According to a spokesperson for the company, it expects AI-generated accounts to behave on is platforms in the same way as humans.
Just last week, Facebook and Instagram users began to discover a series of AI-driven accounts Meta had created back in 2023. While labelled as AI-created and managed by Meta, these accounts took on different ‘personalities’, with some promising dating advice and others functioning as ‘therapists’.
However, once the accounts were rediscovered, Meta deleted them from Facebook and Instagram shortly after.
Who needs AI profiles on Facebook?
Meta may be attempting to attract a younger audience to Facebook and Instagram with the widespread introduction of AI profiles. New tools would likely allow users to create characters of their own, or even clone themselves on Facebook using AI.
However, there are concerns that these new introductions will take society’s online use one step closer to the ‘dead internet theory’, which predicts in a not-too-distant-future that the vast majority of internet activity will be little more than a series of AI-powered agents interacting with each other. Companies such as Meta may welcome such an ‘advancement’, but those who prefer engaging and useful content on social media will likely find their user experience worsens.
At Engage Web, we’re proud to not rely on AI to create the best online content possible – not on social media, and certainly not within our SEO (search engine optimisation) campaigns. For effective human marketing campaigns you can count on, reach out to our experts now.
