Is Meta copying Twitter with its new blue tick feature?

The blue tick has been around for a while on Facebook and Instagram, with it only being available for public figures such as lawmakers, actors, musicians, sports athletes and journalists. However, it will soon be available to everyone – but at a cost!

Meta released news this week that they will be introducing a paid option for a blue tick on Facebook and Instagram. Perhaps taking inspiration from Twitter’s recently released Twitter Blue subscription, the new feature gives all users the chance to pay for verified status on Facebook and Instagram.

According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he new subscription service, which will be called ‘Meta Verified’, will allow you to:

“verify your account using your government ID, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you and will also allow you to get direct access to Meta’s customer support.”

Currently, Meta’s new subscription service is available only in New Zealand and Australia, however Meta plans to expand the subscription globally in the near future. The current cost of the new subscription is $14.99 on Android and iOS devices, while it is slightly cheaper on the web at $11.99.

Meta seems to have released this new subscription due to Twitter introducing a similar feature back in December, which has already had over one million users.

Another reason why this feature has been released is that Meta’s revenue has been hit over the past few years due to Apple’s privacy changes with iOS14, which resulted in $10 billion being lost in ad revenue just this year. Therefore, this new feature seems to be one solution to increase its revenue streams to help them reclaim some of the revenue it has lost in recent years.
