Google ‘mobile first’ strategy comes to fruition

Google ‘mobile first’ strategy comes to fruition

As YouTube success soars, Google has declared that it is a “mobile first” company. The search engine company also predicted that by 2013 most of its products will be accessed by users through a smartphone or tablet. At the Open Mobile Summit 2012 held in San Francisco, Google executives predicted a move away from being a search engine only on desktops, although according to a spokesperson for Google Eric Schmidt spoke of the mobile first plan a number of years ago.

The number of mobile searches made by Google users has increased by 200 per cent during 2012. It was also declared at the summit that people will mostly access the Google site using mobile, according to executives at Google. Mobile devices were used in 2012 to access YouTube and view videos, with 25 per cent of traffic from mobiles. The figures indicate a 300 per cent increase in 2012. A prediction was made by a Google executive that more than 50 per cent of YouTube traffic could be via mobile devices.

However, Google’s focus on mobile operating systems doesn’t surprise some who point out that Google’s business model has a strong reliance on the Android operating system. Eric Schmidt predicts that by 2013 lifetime activations for Android will exceed one billion. The strong focus on mobile devices could have an effect on SEO for some companies. Google is the focus of search engine optimisation for a number of companies and any strategy will have to concentrate on mobile search.
