Top executives at Google, including CEO Sunder Pachai, have said its search engine is going through an “expansionary moment,” thanks to new AI (artificial intelligence) tools that are changing how people search online.
Company leaders talked about the shift during parent company Alphabet’s latest earnings call, explaining that AI is helping people ask longer questions, use more follow ups and search with voice and images more often.
Alphabet reported strong growth at the end of 2025. In the last three months of the year, Google’s advertising revenue reached $82.3 billion, which is 13.5% higher than the same period in 2024. Most of this came from Google Search, which earned $63.1 billion – a jump of nearly 17%. YouTube also grew, while Google’s network ads dropped slightly.
Google says its AI features, like AI Overviews and AI Mode, are now a core part of search. CEO Sundar Pichai said the company launched more than 250 AI related updates in just one quarter. These tools are powered by Google’s Gemini 3 model and are designed to make search feel more like a conversation.
According to Google, people who try these AI features tend to use them more over time. The company says AI is adding to search activity, not replacing older types of searches. Pichai explained that queries in AI Mode are three times longer than normal searches, and many users ask follow-up questions. About one in six AI searches now use voice or images instead of text.
Google also said that the rise of its Gemini app is not taking users away from search. Instead, people move between search, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini depending on what they need.
With more than 580 million Android devices now supporting visual tools like Circle, Google believes this shift marks a major change in how people discover information online. For more information on how we can help your business stay visible, get in touch with the team at Engage Web today.
