Google is taking its AI (artificial intelligence)-powered search function, “AI Mode,” to a whole new level through the use of visuals.
What started as a feature that responded to questions in natural language is evolving to include photos and images alongside text answers. This means that if you search for something like “maximalist bedroom design,” you’ll not only get descriptions but also relevant visuals to inspire you.
Google has claimed that users can now upload a photo and combine it with a written prompt to refine results. Rather than explaining what you mean through words alone, the system allows you to show what you mean. This is particularly helpful in situations where it is hard to articulate with words and you feel that a visual approach may be more beneficial.
This new mode will use a combination of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, Search, Lens and Image Search. When using it on a mobile, you will be able to ask follow-up questions to gather more information.
There’s an important implication here though: your own photos might now show up in Google’s visual AI responses. If you’ve published photos anywhere that Google indexes, they could be surfaced in AI Mode.
For now, the visual AI Mode rollout is underway in English for US users, with plans to expand. If you’re a photographer or a content creator, this update deserves your attention.
