Developer Avos has Wanpai in the oven

In the wake of Vine – the micro video app from Twitter – failing to catch on in China, YouTube’s two founders have developed a similar app they hope will fill the market gap.

Speaking to the New York Times, YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley said that Vine failed to serve the market in China, especially since the app wasn’t translated.

The pair’s new company, Avos, has developed a smartphone app called Wanpai. They acknowledged that while Twitter’s Vine was the original inspiration for Wanpai, it came about largely through the initiative of their team working in Beijing.

The New York Times reported that Twitter is currently blocked by China’s government.

Avos reportedly has a number of projects in the pipeline, including a tool for magazine creation that’s still in the beta stage of testing.

While Wanpai could be familiar to those who have already used Vine, Hurley confirmed that Avos also has another, more original video tool in development, called MixBit.

Many news providers and specialists in internet marketing have found the current social media sites to be effective in increasing conversion rates, but Hurley said he believes some of the bigger platforms for uploading and sharing images or videos – in particular, Instagram and Twitter – may intimidate individuals by focussing too much on self-promotion.

MixBit, when released, will enter what many see as an already crowded market. Twitter’s Vine boasted 13 million registered users within its first four months. Analysts have predicted that Instagram will introduce its own take on micro videos at some point.
