Amazon to launch a 3D smartphone

Web giant Amazon is set to reveal plans to launch a 3D smartphone this summer that will not require special glasses.

Online news providers claim that a prototype version of the phone was presented to developers in both San Francisco and Seattle with an estimated release date of June this year, although the product would not start to be shipped until September.

An Amazon smartphone would be the next logical step for the company to take, as it already has technology in the tablet industry with the Kindle. This move would place the company in direct competition with Apple once again, which also traditionally releases the latest versions of the iPhone at the same time that Amazon wishes to release its product – which will, no doubt, trigger fierce competition between the two rival firms.

Although the company faces stiff competition from Apple and other phone manufacturers like Samsung and Sony, the handset may carry one feature to make it stand out from the crowd; the phone display should be able to allow 3D images to be viewed without the need for specialised glasses. It is reported that it will use retina-tracking technology integrated into four frontal view cameras to project images in a similar fashion to holograms.

The latest development sees Amazon potentially extending its portfolio of products and services once again by entering another new industry. This comes following the recent release of Fire TV, and the re-branding of LoveFilm to Amazon Prime Instant Video earlier this year.
