Internet giant Yahoo has revealed that it is entering the digital video content market by commissioning two original comedy series, which will be broadcast on both its website and mobile apps.
The company looks set to enter a fierce and growing market that includes Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Microsoft to attract potential viewers to its platform. Furthermore, the firm has decided not to charge viewers for the service, but has not disclosed any financial terms regarding licensing.
The company – perhaps better known for its search engine, which puts it in the spotlight of SEO companies – has also confirmed that viewers who wish to watch the series on their televisions will not have to miss out, as there is an arrangement in place that would see viewers able to access programmes through Roku and Apple TV.
Kathy Savitt, Yahoo’s Chief Marketing Officer, explained:
“We are continuing to build our library with universally loved comedy such as Saturday Night Live and Comedy Central.
“Our goal is to not only enable the future but also to help invent it.”
Titles for the two series were also detailed during the announcement in New York. The first will be called ‘Other Space’ and has been described as a futuristic comedy series, whilst the other, entitled ‘Sin City Saints’, depicts and follows the life of the owner of a professional basketball team. The latter will see Mike Tollin – of One Tree Hill fame – come on board as executive producer. The two series are set to be aired in 2015.
