Why the ‘compounding effect’ of SEO is so valuable

If you’ve invested, or at least considered investing in a digital marketing campaign before, you may have heard a marketing expert tell you about one of the benefits of a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign being that it offers ‘compounded’ growth.

You may wonder what exactly this means in terms of the tangible results SEO offers your website, and your business as a whole.

How are SEO results compounded?

Essentially, SEO prioritises long-term benefits over short-term gains. The various aspects of an SEO campaign, such as creating content, link building and making technical improvements to a website, not only add but build upon each other to provide increasing growth the longer the campaign lasts.

Take content creation, for example. The first few blogs, articles and other pages that are added when you begin your campaign are unlikely to have a major impact on growth right away, as you are merely building your site from the ground up. However, as time passes and content is being consistently added to the site, along with the other technical aspects of the campaign, every piece of content is accumulating and contributing to the growth of your site, helping it become more visible on search engines.

How does this differ from other forms of digital marketing?

Other search-related methods of growth include paid advertising approaches such as pay-per-click (PPC). PPC offers increased visibility for as long as you spend money on your campaign, offering greater potential for short-term gains.

However, once you stop paying for this method to give your website more visibility, you lose it all. As your site was essentially being artificially pushed to a more prominent position, it is not ‘built’ the same way that a website improved via SEO is.

With SEO, if you decide to stop investing in the service, all of the work that has gone into building the site up will remain. This means that, in theory, you can use SEO to build your site to a certain level, and decide whether you want to continue building it without being forced to keep paying.
