Google Search is changing quickly. If you’ve spotted AI (artificial intelligence)-generated answers appearing in search results, or heard about Google’s newer AI Mode, you might reasonably wonder whether they’re basically the same thing wearing different hats.
They’re not, and the simplest way to think about it is this: AI Overviews change what you see in Google Search, while AI Mode changes how you search.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that sometimes appear at the top of a Google results page.
Instead of immediately presenting you with a list of websites, Google attempts to answer your question there and then by pulling information together from different sources.
For example, search for something like “How often should I water a tomato plant?” and an AI Overview might give you a short answer covering frequency, weather conditions and signs of overwatering.
Convenient? Absolutely. Slightly less convenient if you’re the tomato-growing website hoping somebody clicks through? Also yes.
AI Overviews are designed mainly for relatively straightforward questions. They provide a one-off summary rather than an ongoing conversation.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode takes things much further.
Rather than giving you one AI-generated answer, it turns Google Search into something closer to a chatbot. You can ask a question, receive an answer and then ask follow-up questions while Google remembers the context of your conversation.
Imagine you search for “Where should I go for a weekend break in Spain?” You could then ask, “Which option is cheapest?”, followed by “What about somewhere with good nightlife?” without repeatedly explaining what you’re talking about.
AI Mode can also break complicated questions into smaller searches behind the scenes. This is sometimes called query fan-out – a rather technical name for Google essentially saying, “There’s a lot going on here, so I’ll investigate several bits at once.”
It can also work with live information, such as shopping data, maps and other up-to-date sources, making it particularly useful for comparisons and more complex research.
Why does the difference matter for websites?
Both features are changing how people find information online. AI Overviews may answer somebody’s question before they ever visit a website, which can reduce traditional organic clicks. AI Mode could change behaviour even further by allowing people to conduct much of their research inside one extended conversation.
This doesn’t mean SEO (search engine optimisation) is disappearing, but it does mean that visibility is evolving.
Ranking highly is still important, but businesses increasingly need content that AI systems can easily understand, extract and reference. Clear explanations, useful information and content covering the real questions customers ask are becoming even more crucial.
Instead of focusing solely on individual keywords, businesses should think about topics, problems and the different questions someone might ask throughout their buying journey.
Google may be changing the packaging, but the underlying principle remains refreshingly familiar: create useful content for real people.
